Mabelis Acevedo
Major: Psychology
Your Story: When my mom became pregnant with me, my dad ended his relationship with her.  He told my mom to have an abortion because he felt like he couldn’t support me financially.  But my mom still had me.  I went to a Christian school and I learned about God but I never dedicated myself to have a relationship with him. Later in high school was when I fully gave my life to the Lord.  After some time, my dad tried to have a relationship with me, but I never wanted anything to do with him because of what had happened.  After time, the only thing that could heal those scars was the love of God.  Thanks to him, today I actually have a good relationship with him and last year, he even accepted Christ into his own life!

How has VC Revolution impacted your Life? How VC Revolution has been the best thing for me! In VC Revolution, I have learned how to be a more dedicated woman of God.  I have learned more of what my purpose in life is.  It is not just to play volleyball, but that I can use volleyball to grow closer to God.  Today I give thanks to God and to Coach because through them, I have better gotten to know my creator.

How have you been serving in the community? I have been helping as the assistant coach of the Varsity team.  I also help teach the discipleship class called Frontera for the JV and Varsity teams. I also am a leader in the youth group where I attend church.

Why is college important for you?
To me college is important because the career I am starting will serve for the work of God and also to help my family.  I see so many needs and I feel that God has seen me to help others and to teach them the truth, just like VC Revolution did for me.

Loreidy Hernandez
Your Story: My dad died when I was ten.  Ever since then, my life has been difficult be cause he was the only one who worked.  When he died, its been difficult to pay for anything because my mom has never been interested in working.  Also, my sister started having kids of her own at a really young age.  Thus, it made it even more difficult because there were more of us in the same house.  But thankfully, my grandma helped us when she could.

I started to play volleyball when I was 13 years old when I was in 6th grade.  Thus, that was when I met Jessica (our coach) and I started to practice with her.  Ever since then, my life started getting better because she taught me many things I didn’t know.  Thanks to her and others who have helped me, I even have had the opportunity to go to college. College was a thing I always thought I would never have the resources to do it.  Thus, I thank God that today I have the opportunity to attend college and achieve my dreams!

How has VC Revolution impacted your Life? I have learned so many values through VC Revolution.  The thing I learned the most from varsity was to be responsible.  Also, it has opened doors for so many opportunities to make my life better, like go to college!

How have you been serving in the communityI have tried to serve in all the ways I can.  I talk to others about God, but I don’t do it enough.  I try to live in a way that people will respect me for my attitude, my personality and they way I act around others.  I think I have been a good example to the people in my community.

Why is college important for you? It is important because it helps me to grow as a person and through college, I will be better prepared in life. Through our education, we can become women with a good future, women who can help a country who needs us.
